SMS_SCAN

Format: $ SMS_SCAN sms_file_name [ipppssoot]
or

$ SMS_SCAN sms_file_name [proppsseell]

The principal function of this command is to scan an SMS for the values of the commanded parameters for a specific observation. The resulting .SMX file is an ASCII file which can be listed, and more importantly, edited. From this file, a rudimentary "Unique Data Log" (.ULX) file can be generated for the selected observation. The .ULX file will not have the full information of an ordinarily down-linked file, but most times there will be sufficient information in that file to allow the selected observation to proceed through generic conversion.

An observation may be retrieved either by specifying the PODPS-style ipppssoot, or the SPSS-style proppsseell. If the observation identifier is omitted, the program reports the ipppssoot and proppsseell of each observation in the SMS.

A .SMX file in ASCII format containing the extracted observation.

sms_file_name

The name of the file which contains the SMS for the observation. This filename can be any valid VMS filename. A directory specification (e.g., DISK$BRUNO:[]) may also be used in specifying this name.

ipppssoot

The PODPS-style name of the observation to be found in the SMS:

i : instrument character (U|V|W|X|Y|Z)

ppp : program_id (3 characters)

ss : obset_id (2 characters)

oo : ob_number (2 characters)

t : type (1 character, usually (R|O|T|M))

proppsseell

The SPSS-style name of the observation to be found in the SMS:

Where:

propp : proposal_id (5 character)

ss : obset_id (2 characters)

ee : exposure_id (2 characters)

ll : alignment_id (2_characters)

MAKE_ULX Constructs a binary .ULX file from an extracted SMS file which is in ASCII format.

$ SMS_SCAN TEMPSMS.DAT
Lists all observations found in the file TEMPSMS.DAT in the current default directory.

$ SMS_Scan DISK$BRUNO:[HOME.DATA]TEMPSMS.DAT
Lists all observations found in the file TEMPSMS.DAT in the [HOME.DAT] directory on DISK$BRUNO.

$ SMS_SCAN TAAY00M0V.POD Y0DH0302R
Searches the SMS file TAAY00M0V.POD for the observation Y0DH0302R. If the observation is found, the file Y0DH0302R.SMX will be created in the current default directory.
